Leon, the traditional competitor of Granada. This beautiful city
charms with colonial style and outdoor activities. It is known for being the intellectual
center and liberal element in Nicaragua.
Leon’s history goes back to 1524 where
it was founded by the Spanish conqueror Francisco Hernández de Córdoba but
needed to be relocated 30 km further in 1610 because of the eruption of the Momotombo
volcano.
Leon’s character is formed by Spanish conquerors
and the indigenous Sutiaba tribe which community still exists.
The city is
charming with architecture Highlights in colonial style, museums and several sightseeing
spots which take you back in history. It is really a highlight for those who
are interested in Nicaraguan Art, Traditions and culture.
As a
Destination hot spot, you will also meet travelers from all over the world. There
is always a good party going on somewhere or you can choose between several activities
like volcano climbing and boarding, kayaking around the nearby (30 min drive) Juan
Venado Island.
