“Las Mercedes Reforestation Project” has been the dream of the Mendoza family for about 5 years now. This local family has donated approximately 30 acres of land to be reforested in order to help the ecology of Nicaragua and help combat the deforestation problem that plagues the country.

The Nicaraguan tropical forests are being lost at an alarming rate, largely due to agricultural expansion. This loss is resulting in the extinction of native plants and wild animals, an increase in greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate changes. They have decided to help stop deforestation by transforming their farm land, used for agricultural purposes for many years, back to what it once was, a beautiful forest providing shelter to many animals, producing oxygen, and offsetting the carbon foot print.

If you find yourself traveling to, or in Nicaragua and wish to help make a difference in the environment, please visit Las Mercedes. This private, non-denomination project is located in the Savana Grande Community, a few kilometers south of the town of Ocotal in Nueva Segovia. (Km 208 Pan-American Highway)

This volunteer program is not just about working, but about learning and having a new life experience. The projects mission states: “We will challenge you, we will make you THINK for yourself, you will be a student, you will be a teacher, you will create and improved, you will share ideas and views, you will learn another language, you will learn to dance salsa, you will laugh, you will see places you have only imagine, you will have fun, and yes, you will do some work; But at the end of your stayed the reward would be priceless.”

The project has just begun and is looking for any amount of help. The conditions are not grand, but humble, and the family is constantly working to try and accommodate the volunteers as comfortably as possible and offer an integrated real life experience. As opposed to other volunteer projects that require a nominal participation fee and are structured and rigid in their dealings of volunteer work, Las Mercedes is grateful have anyone help as much as they can help, only asking that volunteers pay for their own meals, always having the option to buy their own from a local restaurant or have them home-cooked.
