ABOUT
BLUEFIELDS is situated on the south end of Nicaraguas Atlantic Coast. With a population of around 45.000 people, Bluefields is a small town. It is Nicaraguas main carribbean port. The main attraction is the tropical surrounding around Bluefields.
The city was named by the duch pirate "Blauwveldt" who was the first settler of the area. In the 16th and 17th century it was an important rendezvous point for british and dutch buccaneer and son became a popular port. 1678 it became even the capital of the british protectorate over the Mosquito Coast.
The formar Bluefields was destroyed by a hurricane in 1988. The town has been reconstructed and now it is an interesting mixture of colonial style buildings, West Indian cottages and Louisiana plantations. Bluefield is a melting pot for the people of the Atlantic Coast. For fans of carribiean style music, bluefields is worth a visit.
Bluefields surrounding offers to you an ecological Highlight. Explore the rain forest environment with its rich fauna and flora.
You can travel to Bluefields by bus via Rama with a following boat trip down the Rio Escondido or you simply fly via airplane from Managua (~1hr.)
